What is Tooth Extraction?
At R. Asher Henegar, D.D.S., P.A., our goal is to conserve and maintain your natural teeth; however, there are cases in which a tooth or teeth may have to be extracted. A simple extraction removes a tooth that is visible over the gumline. This is generally done for a tooth that's decayed or damaged beyond repair. A surgical extraction takes out a tooth that has not erupted above the gumline. Surgical extractions are most commonly performed to remove impacted teeth, like wisdom teeth, that do not have sufficient room to fit into your mouth. Regardless of the reason for needing an extraction, dentist Dr. Asher Henegar will do his best to create a pleasant treatment and healthy outcome. Our Colorado Springs, CO office offers multiple sedation methods, including nitrous oxide so you can remain comfortable and calm throughout your treatment. "A wonderful place to go for a dental work! The office staff is friendly and helpful. Dr Henegar and his assistant were very gentle and caring. They made sure I was comfortable during my visit! I will return!"- P.N. / Google / Sep 28, 2021
"I haven't been to the dentist in over five years. It's a lot easier said then done but when you don't have insurance or have the finances it gets pushed back over the years. I would highly recommend Dr. Henegar. The office was clean and modern. The staff all had smiles and were very friendly upon entering the office. I was greeted with a hand shake by the doctor himself. We took x-rays of my teeth and came up with a plan. Dr. Henegar was very friendly, compassionate and knowledgeable. It felt good to go to the dentist and not be questioned as to why I haven't been to a dentist in so long.We came up with a step by step plan for future visits and he even recommended ortho to help straightrn my bottom teeth in the future. I couldn't be happier with the affordablility but also with the friendly staff. It is nice to be known and addressed by your name rather then a patient room number. No judgments here."- E.M. / Google / Sep 15, 2021
"Cannot recommend Dr. Henegar enough! I just recently started coming here, and the environment is so relaxing. The staff are extremely attentive and friendly. I had to have several fillings done and Dr. Henegar even touched up an old filling that I had as a courtesy. He and his staff are so friendly and caring and make you feel like more than just a dollar walking in the door. As long as I live in the Springs, I’ll be coming back to him!"- M.W. / Google / Sep 15, 2021
"Very polite and professional. They explained the expenses and options very well for me."- N.M. / Google / Sep 14, 2021
What To Expect During and After Tooth Extraction
Tooth extractions are performed in our office using local anesthesia to numb the area around the tooth being removed. Other kinds of sedation may be used based on the extent of the extraction or to help you stay relaxed if you have some dental worries. For a simple extraction, Dr. Henegar will loosen up the tooth with a special device known as an elevator before removal. A surgical extraction is a little more elaborate and involves making incisions into your gums to reach the tooth. If necessary, the tooth may be broken into smaller pieces so that it can be taken out. Once the tooth is removed, Dr. Henegar will stitch the incision in your gums. Depending upon the anesthesia used throughout your extraction, you may need to have an adult drive you home. As your gums heal, you should avoid smoking, spitting, and using straws. Most patients want to eat soft, cool food for the first couple of days following the procedure. Cold compresses can also help relieve any inflammation. Dr. Henegar will give you more details on what to expect during your recovery, if a prescription is necessary, and the best ways to care for your mouth during and after the healing process.
