WHAT TO EXPECT DURING AND AFTER TOOTH EXTRACTION
Tooth extractions are performed in our office using local anesthesia to numb the area around the tooth being removed. Other kinds of sedation may be used based on the extent of the extraction or to help you stay relaxed if you have some dental worries. For a simple extraction, Dr. Henegar will loosen up the tooth with a special device known as an elevator before removal. A surgical extraction is a little more elaborate and involves making incisions into your gums to reach the tooth. If necessary, the tooth may be broken into smaller pieces so that it can be taken out. Once the tooth is removed, Dr. Henegar will stitch the incision in your gums. Depending upon the anesthesia used throughout your extraction, you may need to have an adult drive you home. As your gums heal, you should avoid smoking, spitting, and using straws. Most patients want to eat soft, cool food for the first couple of days following the procedure. Cold compresses can also help relieve any inflammation. Dr. Henegar will give you more details on what to expect during your recovery, if a prescription is necessary, and the best ways to care for your mouth during and after the healing process.

When do you need a tooth extraction?
In general, a tooth is extracted (removed) when the tooth is decayed or damaged beyond repair, meaning that a root canal, filling, or other restorative dental procedure isn’t recommended.
Does a tooth extraction hurt?
Whether your tooth extraction is simple or more involved, Dr. Henegar offers multiple anesthetic and sedation options to keep you comfortable during the procedure. Before he begins, Dr. Henegar will numb the treatment area with an anesthetic. Sedation options can include nitrous oxide, which helps to keep you calm and relaxed the entire time. After the extraction, some soreness and discomfort may be experienced as your mouth heals, but this can be alleviated with cold compresses, pain relievers, and pain medications if prescribed.
How long does a tooth extraction usually take?
A typical tooth extraction can take about 20 – 45 minutes.
How long is recovery after a tooth extraction?
Dr. Henegar will go over what you’ll need to do during the recovery period during your consultation and post-procedure. He recommends that someone drive you home after your appointment. Typically, most patients will need to take it easy for 48 – 72 hours after their extraction before resuming normal activities. Smoking, spitting, and using straws are not recommended so your gums can properly heal. Eating soft and cool foods for the first few days after your procedure is recommended. Typically, it can take about 3 – 4 weeks for the gums to completely heal after a tooth extraction.
